I was talking with a client the other day about tips to help while grocery shopping.
His immediate response was “Grocery shopping tips? Really? Isn’t shopping something we all just do? How is this really going to help my health?”
Our health starts with food. Honestly, as simple and mundane as grocery shopping seems, arming yourself with a few strategic tips can help set you up for a healthier and more sustainable week based on the food you come home with.
Don’t go hungry – it’s too easy to give in to immediate rewards of process foods.
Make a list and stick too it– if you are an impulse buyer, try online ordering for delivery instead.
Shop the perimeter of the store– think produce and meats. The middle aisle and end caps are processed and full of preservatives.
Buy bulk bin items – these are much cheaper and you don’t pay for packaging.
Use the salad bar – it’s a great place to buy pre-cut veggies in very small amounts.
Bring your own reusable bag(s)– it’s better for the environment and only buy as much as will fill that bag or two. Do this for veggies too (I love these re-usable produce bags) or just skip the little plastic bag- it’s not needed!
