Candy-free giveaways to keep your Halloween Healthy

Halloween. It’s not exactly synonamous with healthy. Doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy it, but it does mean it’s time to get seriously creative.

I’m a believer in letting the kids go trick-or-treating. I loved getting dressed up on halloween – heck, I still do! While I’m not an advocate for highly processed candy, I do believe in treats – chocolate being one of them. However, most kids aren’t interested in 80% dark chocolate I indulge in … and giving that away would be $$$$!

Plus, if you are trying to keep sweets to a minimum in your house and have low self-control coupled with cravings, it can be difficult to even have the candy in your house.

A number of clients have asked me what to do when they don’t want to buy bags of candy to give away. I totally understand, while I think everyone should enjoy Halloween I don’t feel like I should be pressured into giving away super processed candy that may end up in my belly. Besides, the kids will get enough of that elsewhere for sure.

So I created a quick list of ideas to give away instead of candy. Most of this stuff can be picked up at the dollar store. Just make a great big bowl or bag of it all and let the kids pick for themselves. That usually helps to squash any grumbling about not getting candy.

  • Glow sticks
  • Bubbles
  • Pencils
  • Erasers
  • Pencil toppers
  • Vampire teeth
  • Dollar store goodie bags
  • Play dough
  • Temporary tattos
  • Bouncy balls
  • Slap bracelets
  • Coloring pages
  • Crayons
  • Trail mix
  • Mini waters
  • Bags of nuts
  • Playing cards
  • Honey sticks

What are you planning on giving away this year??

Leftover Halloween Candy? Here’s your solution!

Halloween often means bags and bags of leftover candy.

But now the left over candy is haunting you ….

it’s calling your name             ………          it’s begging to be eaten.

It’s usually the candy you don’t even like- but it’s still there, taunting the kids and you. Sound familiar?

I find it’s best to just get rid of it. But rather than tossing it into the garbage, here’s a few great ideas of what to do with those left over sweets:

Candy Buy Back program. Started by dentists, the goal of the program is to remove excess halloween candy from kids and support the troops. Depends on the program but you might get cash, coupon, toothbrushes or the like in exchange for the candy.

Donate it. Similar idea- the candy is used in care packages for Veteran organization and troops stationed overseas. This one removes the idea of getting something in return, which is a great learning experience for kids to experience the joy and satisfaction of donating and helping others for!

A quick search on Google will return lots of local places that participate in both the above options.

Trade-n-Treat, Candy Monster or Switch Witch. This one goes by a few different names, but essentially you let the kids pick out a few pieces of the candy they really would like to have. The rest gets exchanged for a small toy or something else non-food related.

Make an early Gingerbread House. Use part of the candy to make a gingerbread house. Nobody really wants to eats candy off one of those!

What did you do with your left0over Halloween candy?
