Monday mornings are such a drag!
- The Fun is Over: For most people, Monday signals that the weekend has come to a close and the fun is over.
- Circadian Rhythm Disruptions: If you stay up later than normal and sleep in on the weekends, this throws off your body’s natural sleep-wake cycle, making it harder to wake back up earlier on Monday morning.
- Work Week Woes: Work can feel daunting, especially if you pick up your phone and look at emails while still in bed. Your mind gets hijacked before it has a chance to even wake up.
- Snoozing = Grogginess: Research has actually proven that hitting the snooze button disrupts your sleep cycle and creates more fragmented sleep, which results in you feeling more groggy and disoriented.
So what’s the answer to the Monday Morning Blues?
There’s a link between our morning routine and focus, resilience and longevity.
One great analogy is to think of your nervous system as a ship.
If the ship is aimed in the right direction early on, versus floating aimlessly in the vast ocean, hoping the waves take you to the right place, it’s much easier to stay on the intended path for the rest of the day.
Hydrating, activating your nervous system, and practicing mindfulness are all ways to affect the ship’s trajectory.
On the flip side, the stress of a rushed morning produces extra cortisol, raising your blood sugar and creating feelings of restlessness and anxiety.
Not a great way to start the day.
It’s hard to define what a good morning routine is. There isn’t a formula that’s best for everyone.
If you’ve seen the ridiculous 5-hour morning routine some ‘influencers’ are touting…. this aint that!
Research has proven the only way to sustainable change is through small, achievable goals; ones that you can be consistent with.
