Every day we make hundreds of choices that will either help or harm our health. Ideally the goal is to make more helpful decisions than harmful ones.

While weight loss can be frustrating, setting up a few tactiles approaches will go a long way in achieving success. This article focuses on small steps you can do in the evening hours to help you on your journey.

Before we get into it, it’s important to disclaim that it’s usually never just one thing that causes weight gain. Additional adipose tissue likely develops due to a number of factors … one of which is eating late at night. Along with that, here are a few other ideas for you.

EAT BREAKFAST

Breakfast is sooo far away from the evening, how could it have an affect on the evening? Skipping meals throughout the day can make us so ravenous at night that starvation mode causes overeating.

But what about fasting, you ask? Fasting needs a balanced blood sugar and it also likely requires working up to it. The other piece that is often missed in the fasting conversation is that it’s not just about skipping meals, what and how you eat when you are eating matters.

STOP EATING 2-3 HOURS BEFORE SLEEP

It’s harder to burn off calories while you’re sleeping compared to when you have the ability to move about while awake. Plus the body has systems and functions are designed to happen in these overnight hours, like your immune system fighting infections and inflammation, cortisol (stress hormone) lowers to allow melatonin to rise, the brain stores new information and gets rid of toxic waste, the nerve cells communicate & organize, nerve cells communicate and are restored and the lymph system carries out the trash among other processes. These won’t happen when the body is busy digesting food.

If blood sugar is a challenge, a small handful of nuts or a quarter of a banana just before bed might be helpful to balance the blood sugar through the night, allowing the body to stay asleep. The key here is a SMALL snack; it’s likely a lot less than your typical snack is.

SLEEP

Sleep is a secret weapon when it comes to weight loss. Prioritize sleep and learn about the circadian rhythym to allow the body systems to optimize optimally. Plus you’ll feel refreshed and more energetic to achieve more.

TAKE TIME TO SET UP THE NEXT DAY

It’s hard to sleep when you’re ruminating about all the stuff you need to get done the next day. Create a routine that allows you to take note of what is coming up for the next day, jotting down any notes that may keep you awake. Keep that journal by your bed so you can quickly drop down anything else that comes up, allowing you to get back to the sleep at hand.

Eat at the table

5 simple tweaks for losing weight

Eating all the ‘right’ foods and still not seeing the scale budge? Food is a really big part of our weight, but how and when we eat play a big role too.

Plus, breaking weight loss down into small, manageable bites is easier than putting pressure on yourself to see large numbers move. Incorporating small, eating hygiene changes can actually help how your body processes the food you do eat.

Here are my top 5 favorite tips for helping to nudge the needle (especially on those last few pounds):

  1. Stop eating after 7pm at night: This is my #1 tip. Eating late at night forces the body to work on digesting when it should be resting and repairing. All this food ends up getting stored in places you don’t want it too.
  2. Fill up on veggies FIRST: Instead of feeling like you have to skip food, just reverse the order of items you eat first. Finish all the vegetables first, then if you are still hungry have a few bites of the rest (the bread, the meat, the starch.) You might find that the bread in that basket actually is too hard to even enjoy by that time and not worth it.
  3. Drink water away from meals: I’ll bet you’ve heard just the opposite, right? So many people say to fill up on water before eating so you feel less full. But, when you load up on water and pile a bunch of food on top, it’s only going to make you more bloated. And it dilutes your much needed stomach acid which is going to complicate the entire digestive process. Drinking plenty of water is key (half your body weight in ounces), but do it away from meals for the best benefit.
  4. Enforce the Table Rule: Eat every meal at a table, not at your desk or on the couch in front of the TV. Conscious eating (focusing on the food, slowing down, chewing) will help you eat less and slower, so your body will be focused on digestion so you’ll experience less gas and bloating too.
  5. Brush your teeth..often!: nothing tastes good, or is even appealing, after brushing your teeth. Feel a craving coming on? Stop and brush it away.
  6. BONUS TIP: Reduce the amount of food you are eating. We’ve become desensitized to extremely large portion sizes, over-sized plates and jumbo drinks. Make a fist and hold that against your plate of food. Will it all fit in inside that fist, because that is roughly the size of your stomach. Saving just 20% of your food for a light snack later can help reduce the load on the entire digestive process.

Roasted & Spiced Cauliflower Soup

Is there anything cauliflower can’t do? I love the versatility of vegetable, but also don’t want to forget about the classics- like soup. Like this Roasted Cauliflower Soup.

This is a super easy recipe that is mostly hands off thanks to roasting the cauliflower with all the spices. Just pop it in the blender and it’s good to go. No onions or garlic either so it’s a great option for anyone following a FODMAP diet- but you could add them and roast with the cauliflower if you wanted to.

Roasted & Spiced Cauliflower Soup

1 head of cauliflower (roughly 5-6 cups )

1 tbls olive oil

1 tsp ground cumin

1 tsp ground coriander

1 tsp pink Himalayan or sea salt

1/2 tsp ground ginger

1/2 tsp ground turmeric

1/4 tsp ground cinnamon

1/8 tsp pepper

Juice of 1 orange

 

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees and line a baking pan with parchment paper.

Break the cauliflower into smaller florets and toss with the olive oil and all the seasonings. Roast in the oven for about 30 minutes or until desired texture is reached.

Cool slightly and place in a blender along with the orange. Add a smidge of water as needed to blend.

NOTES: I really like this soup to have texture, so blend on a low speed to keep this more chunky and hearty. Blend on high if you want it more smooth.

Achieving great health means balancing a number of pillars, including learning to manage stress, getting good sleep, positive thinking and a sense of purpose and belonging among others.

But it doesn’t mean you have to try to achieve this all in one day.

That’s why I created the 21 Day Refresh. Honesty, I won’t lie. I really struggled with whether this should be only 5 or 10 days. It’s certainly more approachable for everyone, including me! But it truly didn’t take us 5 days to get into the shape we are now, so it’s a bit of odd logic to think we can fix it all in just 5 days…isn’t it?

I chose 21 days because

  • it takes roughly 3 weeks (21 days) to form a new habit
  • this isn’t a diet
  • you will just keep feeling better
  • there is no better time than January to start fresh and commit to you

How will I feel?
Admittedly, the first 3 days could be challenging, maybe more depending on the toxicity in your body. Whatever aches, burps, rumbles and grumbles you experience in the first three days, be patient with them; they will pass. This is a fantastic opportunityto learn a little body intuition (understand the signals it’s sending you!) The body is an amazing work of art, once we start to feed it real, whole food it begins to heal.

Remember, you won’t be going through this alone!

Will I be hungry?

You don’t have to be hungry on a cleanse. This is not a juice cleanse, you will eat real food!

Can I / do I have to eat meat or fish?

We’ll help you customize the detox to your needs, so you can stay within your own preferred eating plans.
